Onam

Onam is a vibrant and joyous festival celebrated in the state of Kerala, India, marking the harvest season and the return of the mythical King Mahabali. It brings together people from all walks of life, regardless of their religion or social status. We aim to encapsulate this spirit of unity and cultural richness in our Onam celebrations in Poland, providing an ideal platform for cultural exchange and bonding with local Polish communities.

All About Onam

Here's how we plan to foster cultural connect during the Onam celebration:

  • Pookalam Competition: A unique and colourful tradition during Onam is the creation of Pookalam, a floral carpet made using various kinds of flowers. We will host a Pookalam competition, inviting both Indian and Polish families to participate. This would provide a chance for the Polish community to delve into this beautiful art form, fostering artistic collaboration and cultural exchange.

  • Onam Sadhya: Onam is renowned for its grand feast known as 'Onam Sadhya', comprising of various traditional vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf. We aim to organize a community Sadhya where participants can enjoy this unique culinary experience. This would offer an insight into the rich food culture of Kerala, thereby forging a gastronomical bond between the communities.

  • Cultural Performances: The event will include traditional art forms like Mohiniyattam, Thiruvathira, and a percussion ensemble (Chenda Melam). We plan to have workshops before the performances to introduce the Polish community to these art forms. This exchange would allow a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other's cultural nuances.

  • Traditional Games: Onam is also known for its traditional games, known as Onakalikal, which include tug of war, and more. Incorporating these games into our celebration can provide a unique, hands-on cultural experience for the Polish community.

  • Onam Legends and Storytelling: Storytelling sessions explaining the legend of King Mahabali and the significance of Onam will be organized. These stories can be a bridge, connecting the Polish community to the rich mythology and cultural narratives of Kerala.

  • Community Engagement: We aim to involve the local Polish community in the planning and execution of the event as volunteers. This can foster a deeper understanding and mutual respect for each other's culture and traditions.

Through these initiatives, the Onam celebration will serve as a meaningful platform for cultural exchange, enhancing the understanding and appreciation of Kerala's unique cultural heritage among the Polish community. It will provide an opportunity for both communities to connect, interact, and celebrate together, fostering lasting friendships and stronger cultural ties.
